Pietra Dura

An Italian term for an expensive form of inlay using semiprecious stones, such as jasper and lapis lazuli, to create decorative panels for cabinets and table tops. Pietra dura was first evident in Italy during the Renaissance; the technique became very popular during the 17th century.
