Kiln Dried
The process of reducing the moisture content of timber in order to inhibit checking, splitting and to strengthen the finished product.
The timber is placed on stickers in a kiln heated by an oil, gas or wood fired boiler. Hot water from the boiler is fed through pipes running inside the kiln. As the temperature rises, the wood gives up its moisture. Excess moisture is removed by fans venting to the outside, whilst fresh air is drawn in. Care must be taken to ensure temperature and humidity are properly controlled during the drying process.
