Acanthus

A Mediterranean plant, Acanthus spinosus, with fleshy scalloped leaves. From antiquity, it was widely used for carved ornament, such as decorative mouldings, and Corinthian and Composite capitals. In the 18th century, it was a popular motif for woodcarving, furniture and metalwork.
